NEBULA

Designed and built by: Zsuzsanna Horváth, Ariane Relander, Hao Wu

We participated in the Bergen International Wood Festival 2016 representing Aalto University in the biennial competition organized during the week of the festival. The BIWF focuses on the use of wood as a material, and on its constructive, structural and tactile qualities. The competition was aimed at designers, architects, artists and students of these fields from all over the world to create experimental spatial constructions in wood. As the participants had to join teams of three people, we chose to form our group between Zsuzsanna Horvath, Ariane Relander and Hao Wu, all three of us from the Product and Spatial Design Master’s program, We designed our installation and got selected as one of the 24 teams who could go and build on site in Bergen between the 8th and the 14th of May, 2016. We ended up with a really light and poetic installation which attracted a lot of attention.

Nebula is in the same time a sculpture and an interactive installation as it moves with the wind and with the interaction of the people touching it. The wave was “drawn in its shape by a 3D computer model but its form is never final, as it is continuously reshaped by the movement of the wind. However, as strong as the wind can be, the movement stays peaceful and imprints the sculpture with a really soft wave. The sculpture breathes, it lives.
